Summer and Sun Protection
by Dianna
Summer has arrived, bringing sunshine, improved mood, a boost to our immune systems
and the general improvement in well-being that is associated with the summer season.
Along with enjoying long days, and sunny afternoons, it is important to remember to protect
the skin from UV radiation which can cause premature ageing, wrinkles, burns to the skin,
excess pigmentation, and cancer. Over seven hundred people are fatally affected by skin
cancer every year in the UK.
All skin types benefit from sun protection and the recipe below is inexpensive to make and
can be stored in the fridge in a glass jar reducing the use of plastic.
It is quick and easy to make and can be decanted into a small glass jar, making it portable
and available for use when needed throughout the day.

- 60mls of coconut oil which
has a natural SPF of 7
(sun protection factor) - 2 tbsp (30mls) of
powdered zinc oxide - 60mls of pure aloe vera gel
- 25 drops walnut extract oil
- 10drops of carrot seed oil
- 230mls of shea butter for a
spreadable consistency
Method
- Combine all ingredients, except the zinc oxide and aloe
vera gel and carrot seed oil, in a medium saucepan. Let
the shea butter and oils melt together at medium heat. - Take off the heat and cool for several minutes before
stirring in aloe the vera gel. - Cool completely before adding zinc oxide, and carrot seed
