Fuel Poverty and Energy Efficiency
by Polly Frayne – Community Connector for Haringey Reach and Connect
Haringey has an estimated 15,393 households experiencing fuel poverty in 2020, higher thanthe London average and set to rise due to the impact of Covid 19. A household is said to be fuel poor if unable to maintain an adequate standard of warmth, which results in living with excess cold. Fuel poor households will have low income but a higher energy requirement compared to the average household.
Haringey Council has responded by launching a 5-year plan with the Affordable Energy Strategy, to improve the energy efficiency of homes to tackle the causes of fuel poverty Residents can benefit from seeking the best tariff by switching energy suppliers, those who are having trouble switching due to debt issues or high bills due to being a tenant should seek specialist advice.
To explore potential benefits of helping households become more energy-efficient and identify support available to residents who may be struggling with energy bills, Haringey Reach and Connect, recently partnered with SHINE to run a series of online workshops.
